Church of The Holy Rude
Stirling's principle church for more than 500 years and site of crowning of King James VI in1567. Features maginficent stained glass windows and one of Scotland's few surviving medieval open timber roofs. Nave and tower date in part from 1456-70. Each craft guild formerly maintained an altar to its patron saint while wealthy burgesses built their own chapels. The vaulted chapel of St Andrew survives in tact to this day. A 17th century dispute in the church's congregation led to a dividing wall being built within the church which was removed during the restorations in 1936.
